GritAI Newsletter: OpenAI's Codex, Windsurf's SWE-1 🏄‍♂️, and DeepMind's AlphaEvolve 🤖

Hey 👋

This week OpenAI released Codex, a cloud-based coding agent that handles feature development, bug fixes, and testing in parallel — bringing “pair programming” to Pro, Team, and Enterprise users inside ChatGPT (Plus users soon!). The launch is particularly interesting given the rumors that OpenAI is acquiring the AI-powered coding tool Windsurf.

Speaking of Windsurf, they released SWE-1 this week, their first AI models for coding optimized for the entire software engineering lifecycle. It’s not just about writing code faster, but speeding up everything from planning to testing and delivery.

Google DeepMind also made headlines this week with the launch of AlphaEvolve — a Gemini-powered agent designed for general-purpose algorithm discovery and optimization. The agent has already delivered promising results such as improving Google’s data center efficiency by 0.7%, enhancing TPU chip designs, and discovering new solutions in advanced mathematics.

But that wasn’t the only AI news this week. Let’s dive in! 🏄‍♂️

AI Pulse 🚨

A bite-sized curation of this week's most important AI news.

🎯 OpenAI has launched Codex, a cloud-based coding agent that handles parallel tasks like feature development and bug fixes. Available for ChatGPT Pro, Team, and Enterprise users, it runs tasks in isolated sandbox environments.

🌊 Windsurf has released SWE-1, their first family of models optimized for the entire software engineering process.

🔄 Meta’s highly anticipated Llama 4 “Behemoth” model (288B parameters) faces delays until fall 2025 or later. Engineers are reportedly struggling to achieve significant improvements over previous versions, despite claims it outperforms GPT-4.5 and other leading models on STEM benchmarks.

🌐 LangChain has launched Open Agent Platform, an open-source, no-code platform for building and managing AI agents. The platform enables non-developers to create customizable agents that can connect to MCP tools, use RAG through LangConnect, and interact with other LangGraph agents. The project includes pre-built agents and a public demo for easy experimentation.

📊 Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) released an report on Nine Emerging Developer Patterns for the AI Era. The report explores how AI is fundamentally changing software development, from version control to documentation, and introduces concepts like AI-native Git and agent-driven dashboards.

🇸🇪 Sana has launched the Swedish AI Reform initiative, providing free access to Sana Agents for civil servants, students, teachers, researchers, and non-profit employees over the next two years. The program, backed by the newly created Swedish AI Reform Foundation and private donors, aims to drive broad AI adoption across Swedish public sector, academia, and civil society organizations.

🎯 Google DeepMind has announced AlphaEvolve, a Gemini-powered coding agent for discovering and optimizing algorithms. The system has already improved Google’s data center efficiency by 0.7%, enhanced TPU chip designs, and accelerated Gemini’s training by 1%. It also discovered new solutions in mathematics.

🗺️ OpenAI has announced the OpenAI to Z Challenge to discover hidden archaeological sites in the Amazon using AI. The challenge offers $250,000 in prizes and fieldwork opportunities, using OpenAI models with satellite and LIDAR data.

🔬 ByteDance has open-sourced DeerFlow, a new multi-agent framework built on LangChain that automates complex research workflows. The framework enables specialized agents to handle different aspects of research - from planning and knowledge retrieval to code execution and report synthesis.

🛠️ AWS has released Strands Agents, an open-source SDK that simplifies AI agent development using model-driven approaches and includes production deployment tools.

🏢 Notion has released several major AI updates including AI Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search, and Research Mode. The update brings unified search across multiple platforms (Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive), automated PDF indexing, and simplified AI pricing plans.

🚀 Google has launched a new AI Futures Fund initiative to back startups building with Google DeepMind’s AI tools. The fund will provide early access to Google AI models, expert support, Cloud credits, and potential direct investment.

🔐 OWASP has released version 1.0 of the Agent Name Service (ANS), a new DNS-inspired framework for secure AI agent discovery. The system uses PKI for identity verification and introduces structured schemas for agent communication, supporting multiple protocols including A2A, MCP, and ACP.

Hey 👋 This week Elon Musk’s xAI dropped Grok 4, pitching it as “the world’s smartest AI” and even claiming it can outperform most PhDs on tough exams. It includes both a single-agent model and a beefed-up Grok 4 Heavy, available through a $300/month SuperGrok Heavy plan. What makes Grok 4 stand out is its large context window, live web access via X, and strong performance on multi-step reasoning benchmarks like Humanity’s Last Exam, ahead of competitors like OpenAI’s o3 and Google’s Gemini....

Hey 👋 A recent study from MIT got people talking these last few weeks: Is ChatGPT rotting our brains? The study tracked brain activity as students wrote essays, with and without AI assistance. The results were concerning. Those who used ChatGPT showed weaker brain connectivity, lower recall, and less sense of ownership over their work. Neuroscientist Anne-Laure Le Cunff offered a more balanced perspective. Her takeaway is that AI is not the problem. How we use it is. If we allow AI to do the...

Hey 👋 Microsoft has invested billions in positioning Copilot as the go-to AI tool for work. But users are not buying in (yet). A new Bloomberg report confirms what many are experiencing. Even at companies with tens of thousands of Copilot licenses, employees still prefer ChatGPT — because it “works better” and feels more familiar. We are hearing the same in customer conversations. Copilot feels slow, rigid, and tied to Microsoft’s legacy. ChatGPT is faster, more flexible, and already part of...
