GritAI Newsletter: Microsoft vs. OpenAI: Who wins the AI at work race? 💼

Hey 👋

Microsoft has invested billions in positioning Copilot as the go-to AI tool for work. But users are not buying in (yet).

A new Bloomberg report confirms what many are experiencing. Even at companies with tens of thousands of Copilot licenses, employees still prefer ChatGPT — because it “works better” and feels more familiar.

We are hearing the same in customer conversations. Copilot feels slow, rigid, and tied to Microsoft’s legacy. ChatGPT is faster, more flexible, and already part of how people get work done.

Now OpenAI is reportedly planning to double down. According to The Information, they are building collaborative tools that directly compete with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace — including shared documents, integrated chat, and more.

It is a reminder that AI adoption depends not just on what companies roll out, but on what people choose to use. And right now, that tool is ChatGPT.

But that was not the only AI news this week. Let’s dive in 👇

AI @ Work - Part 2 📹

Hey 👋 This week Elon Musk’s xAI dropped Grok 4, pitching it as “the world’s smartest AI” and even claiming it can outperform most PhDs on tough exams. It includes both a single-agent model and a beefed-up Grok 4 Heavy, available through a $300/month SuperGrok Heavy plan. What makes Grok 4 stand out is its large context window, live web access via X, and strong performance on multi-step reasoning benchmarks like Humanity’s Last Exam, ahead of competitors like OpenAI’s o3 and Google’s Gemini....

Hey 👋 A recent study from MIT got people talking these last few weeks: Is ChatGPT rotting our brains? The study tracked brain activity as students wrote essays, with and without AI assistance. The results were concerning. Those who used ChatGPT showed weaker brain connectivity, lower recall, and less sense of ownership over their work. Neuroscientist Anne-Laure Le Cunff offered a more balanced perspective. Her takeaway is that AI is not the problem. How we use it is. If we allow AI to do the...

Hey 👋 Earlier this year, startup CEOs from Shopify and Duolingo shared internal “AI memos” urging their teams to embrace AI or risk falling behind. Most came from fast-moving, product-led tech companies. But now, a major shift: Amazon, the second‑largest private employer in the U.S., has joined the AI memo wave. In a message to employees, CEO Andy Jassy said that as generative AI and agents become more deeply embedded across the company, Amazon’s corporate headcount will shrink over time....
