GritAI Newsletter: Cursor Hits $9B, OpenAI Eyes Windsurf, Figma Joins the Vibe 🏄‍♂️

Hey 👋

This week, the "vibe coding" hype showed no signs of slowing down. Google rolled out an updated version of Gemini 2.5 Pro—its most capable model yet for coding apps—ranking first on the WebDev Arena Leaderboard. Rumors also surfaced that OpenAI is acquiring Windsurf, a leading AI coding tool, hinting at deeper integration of native code capabilities inside ChatGPT.

At the same time, Cursor, now arguably the most popular AI coding tool, announced a massive funding round—reaching a $9B valuation 🤯 just two years after launch.

Figma also joined the vibe with new AI features that turn ideas and sketches into responsive prototypes and production-ready code—making it easier than ever for designers to build and ship directly inside the world’s most popular design tool.

But that wasn’t the only AI news this week—let’s dive in

AI Pulse 🚨

A bite-sized curation of this week's most important AI news.

🚀 Google released early access to Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview with improved coding capabilities now ranking first on the WebDev Arena Leaderboard outperforming competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic.

📈 Anysphere, the company behind Cursor AI, has reportedly secured a massive $900M funding round led by Thrive Capital at a $9B valuation 🤯. Andreessen Horowitz and Accel participated in this round, marking a significant jump from their $2.6B valuation just months ago.

🚨 OpenAI is reportedly acquiring Windsurf for $3 billion. The acquisition will mark OpenAI’s largest to date and signals a strategic move to strengthen its position in AI-assisted “vibe coding” tools. Windsurf also released Wave 8 this week with many new features.

🔄 Mistral has launched its new Mistral Medium 3 model, claiming 90% of Claude Sonnet 3.7’s performance at significantly lower costs. The company also released Le Chat Enterprise, their corporate chatbot service with third-party integrations.

🎨 Figma launched Figma Make, a new “vibe-coding” tool that turns static designs into interactive prototypes. The tool integrates Claude 3.7 Sonnet and enables designers to add animations, real-time feedback, and dynamic data without coding.

🔍 Anthropic launched web search capabilities for its API, allowing developers to build AI solutions without needing to manage their own web search infrastructure.

🤝 Apple and Anthropic are reportedly partnering to develop a “vibe-coding” software platform based on a new version of Xcode. The platform will utilize Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet model and is currently planned for internal use at Apple.

🤖 Vercel now supports the Model Context Protocol (MCP), making it easier to deploy AI-connected tools with integration into AI apps.

Hey 👋 This week Elon Musk’s xAI dropped Grok 4, pitching it as “the world’s smartest AI” and even claiming it can outperform most PhDs on tough exams. It includes both a single-agent model and a beefed-up Grok 4 Heavy, available through a $300/month SuperGrok Heavy plan. What makes Grok 4 stand out is its large context window, live web access via X, and strong performance on multi-step reasoning benchmarks like Humanity’s Last Exam, ahead of competitors like OpenAI’s o3 and Google’s Gemini....

Hey 👋 A recent study from MIT got people talking these last few weeks: Is ChatGPT rotting our brains? The study tracked brain activity as students wrote essays, with and without AI assistance. The results were concerning. Those who used ChatGPT showed weaker brain connectivity, lower recall, and less sense of ownership over their work. Neuroscientist Anne-Laure Le Cunff offered a more balanced perspective. Her takeaway is that AI is not the problem. How we use it is. If we allow AI to do the...

Hey 👋 Microsoft has invested billions in positioning Copilot as the go-to AI tool for work. But users are not buying in (yet). A new Bloomberg report confirms what many are experiencing. Even at companies with tens of thousands of Copilot licenses, employees still prefer ChatGPT — because it “works better” and feels more familiar. We are hearing the same in customer conversations. Copilot feels slow, rigid, and tied to Microsoft’s legacy. ChatGPT is faster, more flexible, and already part of...
